In 1997unit manufacture was ready to commence but the project came to an abrupt halt because the following year Dr Costello was struck down with esophageal cancer.  He recovered to excellent health and finally by 2006 with co-authors Dr Karen Gold and JoAnn Axton publshed the picture polygraph technique in J.Instructional Psychology Vol 33, No 4. As a technique, this could be used for standard issue polygraphs. The original1997-1998 advertisement below is offered for posterity, in honor of Dr Russel N. Cassel who passed away in 2004.

"If you are looking for biofeedback assessment of enhanced presenting symptoms, pain control, relaxation training, sports, clinical and research applications then look no further.

Developed by Dr R Cassel and Dr B Costello * two of the world's leading authorities in computerized biofeedback assessment and Constructed By Postgraduate Board Certified Medical Engineers the BIOVIEW COMPUTERIZED POLYGRAPH unit and software delivers advanced data acquisition at an affordable price.

BIOVIEW is a four channel: pulse rate, temperature, EMG and EDA, (skin conductance) physiological monitoring and recording system specifically designed for stress management and symptom enhancement interpretation. The BIOVIEW data acquisition unit connects to your IBM compatible PC via the serial port and offers monitored parameters to be displayed on the PC's monitor. Since no interface cards are required, BIOVIEW is suitable for notebook computers or multiple computer sites.

Total software control eliminates the need for any buttons or switches - not even an on/off switch!

Client Safety

BIOVIEW conforms with the requirements of the international medical equipment standard IEC601.1. Battery operation and refined optically coupled computer communication isolates all inputs.

Intuitive operation

All functions are controlled from the PC by the BIOVIEW software issuing commands to the computer inside the DAU. BIOVIEW is a powerful analysis tool with an intuitive user interface - no need to remember commands or function keys. Convenient, mouse driven, pull-down menus and pop-up windows, keep the operator fully informed and in complete control at all times.

Monitoring / Active Mode

Up to four traces are viewed in a scrolling display. Each has a separate zoom to expand and center controls for flexible range adjustments. Training/assessment periods range from 10 - 1200 seconds (20 minutes). Ongoing numeric measurements (displayed with graphs) are updated twice per second. In monitoring mode, sensors can be chosen and easily adjusted for the client. A mouse click enters the active mode, in which data is saved for later analysis. Initially, baseline data is collected for comparison with the trial or treatment periods. During the trial periods the client may use the baseline mean as a target for biofeedback training purposes. Markers are provided for denoting any significant client events. At the conclusion of trials, client details and collected data may be saved to the disk.

Review Mode - Bar Graph

Previously captured data may be analysed in the review mode. A useful way of displaying the effectiveness of client trials is through bar graphs. The mean of the baseline and of each trial constitute the height of the bars allowing trends between trials to be readily compared.

Review Mode - Data Plot

The data plot shows how the physiological data varied over any time period. Graph parameters - timebase, range and averaging interval are under operator control. Trial separation lines, event markers and the mean of the plotted interval are all shown on the graph. Any of the four graphs may be expanded to fill the screen to facilitate viewing.

Data Export - For Report Writing

The same data may be displayed numerically in tabular form, or exported as a file in ASCII format for analysis by most popular spreadsheet, database or similar programs - particularly useful for research applications.

A paper copy of any of the analysis modes are obtained by simply clicking the PRINT button. The screen display can be printed on most Hewlett-Packard/Epson printers or compatibles.

Four Parameters For Data Acquisition

Pulse rate, temperature, EMG, epidermal activity (no PC cards to install) battery powered for increased client safety computer connection uses optical coupling for increased client safety, plug and play operation designed to conform to international medical equipment safety standards - IEC601.1
